The process is obligatory for program creation. Tested code is better than untested code.
Thus it has become imperative to test the software components and the software as a whole for the integrity, capability, reliability, efficiency, portability, maintainability, compatibility and usability of the software particularly in the operating environment.
This type of testing is based on the specifications of the software components under test. Normally, it includes smoke, regression and new feature testing, verification of compliance between implemented and desired functionalities.
By this testing the smallest testable parts of an application are individually and independently scrutinized for proper operation.
Testing of internal components and services, testing of external integration modules, compatibility testing.
Data validity and integrity testing, testing of performance related to the database, testing of procedures, triggers and functions.
The principle of automated testing is that there is a program (which could be a job stream) that runs the program being tested, feeding it the proper input, and checking the output against the output that is expected. Once the test suite is written, no human intervention is needed, either to run the program or to see if it works; the test suite does all that, and somehow indicates whether the program output is as expected.
Usually, well-known automated test tools like QuickTest Pro, WinRunner, SilkTest.are used.
